U16 Team Secures Tier 1 Elite League Championship
2012-02-21

The Colorado Thunderbirds win Tier 1 Elite League championships
The Thunderbird U16 team has secured the Tier 1 Elite League Championship with an overall league record of 32-2-6.  "It is a great achievement for our program. We have been close in the past but this group of 20 young men have been extremely consistent week in and week out," said Angelo Ricci, Thunderbird U16 Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations for the Colorado Thunderbirds. The Tier 1 Elite League is comprised of 24 of the top AAA teams across the US and is considered by many to be the top midget AAA league in the country.  "While we are proud of this accomplishment, our focus is now solely on the Rocky Mountain District championships.  Our players have one thing on their mind and that is to earn an opportunity to advance to Buffalo," added Coach Ricci.  The RMD championships tournament will be held in Denver at Big Bear Ice Arena March 1-4.  The district champion will advance to the USA Tier 1 National Championship tournament which will be held in Buffalo, NY March 28 - April1, 2012.  The Thunderbirds U16 team won the USA Tier 1 National Championship in 2010.

Helping Ebo

To the Tier 1 Family
Some of you may already know that one of our Team Comcast players, Eric "Ebo" Eberling, age 16 who is on the 16U American team, has been diagnosed with a malignant tumor on his femur. We are all deeply saddened by this news. Ebo has begun his chemo treatments and has a long journey ahead of him. His surgery was on Jan.13th where they removed part of his femur and his knee. He is now doing physical therapy and continuing with his chemotherapy. He still has a long road of recovery ahead of him. Our prayers are with him and we hope he has success with his treatments. Ebo's family has been overwhelmed and amazed by the support they have already received from the hockey community.

In order to help with the financial burden, we are selling t-shirts to support Ebo. The t-shirts cost $10.00. There are several teams in the Atlantic Youth Hockey League who are selling these t-shirts also, including teams on the West Coast. I am asking you to help me out with this endeavor. If you would like to help out in this cause you can take orders from your own team and collect the money, then send the order and money to me and I will order the shirts. For an order form please contact Rich Brusco. We are also selling pins for $5.00 each if anyone would like to purchase a pin.
If you want to just make a donation please make the check out to Ebo Fights Cancer and send to Rich Brusco 10 Hemlock Dr., Blenheim, NJ 08012.
Ebo is a wonderful kid and has a positive attitude. The Eberlings will be forever grateful for anything we can do for them. Please feel free to pass this on to your team parents/players.
Thank you for your help.

Former Ice Den Player Selected for NCAA Division I Scholarship
Phoenix, AZ (December 2011) -- The Jr. Coyotes Youth Hockey program is pleased to announce the NCAA Division I scholarship commitment of Michael Colantone with the University of Massachusetts-Lowell beginning with the 2012-13 hockey season. The UMass-Lowell River Hawks men's hockey team plays out of the Hockey East Association (N.C.A.A D-1). Colantone last played at the Ice Den in North Scottsdale during the 2008-2009 season for the U18 P.F. Chang's team in the Tier 1 Elite League.
Colantone currently competes for the Prince George Spruce Kings in the British Columbia Hockey League, which plays at the Canadian Junior 'A' - Tier 2 level. In 22 games with the Kings this year, Colantone has 11 goals including three game winners and 22 assists for an average of 1.5 points per game. Colantone was acquired early in the season through a trade with the Victoria Grizzlies where he had a total of 37 points (13 goals, 24 assists) in 59 games.
Colantone was elated to finally realize his dreams.  "I want to thank my family back in Arizona for their belief in me and also my many coaches that I had at the Ice Den throughout the years," said Colantone.  Coyotes Amateur Hockey Association Director Mike De Angelis of the Ice Den noted, "We are very proud of Michael and his determination to accomplish his goals of playing D1 college hockey.  There were many bumps in the road along the way, but his will to succeed at any cost was very evident from the beginning.  Michael represents the kind of player that our association is now developing with them having the ability to compete in leagues at a high national level before they leave for junior hockey."
The Ice Den's hockey programs have achieved a standard that places them as Arizona's leader in developing local talent while paving a clear path to junior college and professional hockey. De Angelis said, "We are proud of the ground work that we have laid and equally as proud of our players as they continue to make their mark each season and are placed in high level junior and college programs."
